Zanzibar
derived its name from the two words Zenji and Bar "Zanzibar",
meaning the black empire.
This
fascinating Island on the Indian Ocean is described as the
Jewel in the ocean or the Spice Island, has therefore lured the
travelers to its shores for centuries ago.
It was in the
19th century that the Island enjoyed its most recent heyday,
following the introduction of the clove trees in 1818.
As a result
Zanzibar became the most important town on the east coast of
Africa, virtually all trade passed through it.
Unguja and
Pemba are sister Islands forming Zanzibar both within Tanzania.
Zanzibar
merged with mainland Tanganyika one year after its historical
revolution in 1963, thus forming the United Republic of
Tanzania.
The many
centuries of mult - cultures the island enjoyed from the
Sumerians, Assyrians, Egyptians Phoenicians , Indians, Chinese,
Dutch, Portuguese and Oman Arabs made the Island historical
rich, the most recent interaction was from the Oman's which
bore the culture of what is now known as Swahili, spreading to
a great extent on the east Africa's coastal trip as far as to
the south namely Kilwa and to the north Lamu in Kenya.
Hence,
Zanzibar was a trade, exploration start off point to the
African interior and historical hub in the East Africa, dating
back to 12 Century, it's worthy while paying a visit.
